The new captains of Faversham Golf Club have announced they will work together this season to support the Melanoma Fund, the charity behind the Slip! Slap! Swing! sun protection campaign for golf as their club charity for 2022-23.

Club Captain Phillip Dott and Lady Captain Sheila Fullager made the announcement at the recent Annual General Meeting at the club in January, attended by over 100 members, as well as CEO of the Melanoma Fund, Michelle Baker.

The charity raises awareness of melanoma and other forms of skin cancer via their four prevention campaigns, highlighting the importance of sun protection, and the risk of skin cancer to all in sport and outdoor recreation.

The captains have been busy planning their activity schedule for the coming season, and plan to hold an intensive range of fundraising activities at the club throughout 2022 and 2023, including raffles and auctions, golf days and skin checks, to be organised with the support of the charity.

Say’s club captain, Phil Dot; “We all know someone touched by skin cancer. Golf is a sport which requires diligence around sun protection, however it is easy to underestimate the power of the sun, and not use sun protection. We aim to help change that.

It was also important to both myself and Shelia to support a charity which is not only local to our region but makes a difference to the lives of people affected by the horrible cancer on a national level and the Melanoma Fund ticked all the boxes.

Faversham Golf Club has been Sun Protection Accredited to Slip! Slap! Swing! for a few years, and we so we saw first-hand how important this was to our members and staff, many of whom has suffered the effects of skin cancer. Supporting their work is so important, and we aim to help expand this highly relevant campaign.

Speaking about the Captain’s decision to take on the Melanoma fund as the club charity, Michelle Baker, CEO of the charity said: “It is always exciting to generate support from a golf club, as a golf captain’s input is always so diligent and passionate.

Having met Phil and Sheila several times, I feel this is going to be a successful collaboration for all. Not only are they personable and fun to work with, they are 100% focused on their roles and are determined to not only create a positive impact at the club, but also keen support our charity and create lots of awareness, and we aim to match their energy!”

The Slip! Slap! Swing! sun protection campaign for golf was created by the Melanoma Fund in 2019 and has since generated support from every golf organisation in the UK and over 500 golf clubs. The campaign returns this year with a brand new subscription format, a new collaboration with golf tour operators and an exciting partnership with the GCMA.
