Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code

Q: Are you doing all you can to protect the children in your care?

Help us Blow the Whistle on Sunburn!

We launched the Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code in 2014 and two years later we  are now supported by over 120 National Governing Bodies, outdoor organisations, clubs, celebrities and sporting hero’s.  Our partners include the Association for Physical Education, the Association for Physical Education (afPE), Youth Sport Trust and Sports Coach UK, all working together to create positive action.

Getting OK Accredited

The Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code is the only FREE accreditation sun protection scheme designed to specifically support outdoor activity leaders.  To become OK Accredited, individuals and groups simply need to read the OK Code and then develop their a unique OK sun pledge, informing parents and all others that when children attend their sessions; they have to be adequately protected from the sun.  Our downloadable toolkit provides materials that keep guidelines front of mind and ensure good practice it is supported by parents.

Why Now?

Melanoma is one of the fastest rising cancers in the UK today and can be sparked by over exposure to the sun, in particular sunburn.  Just one blistering sunburn can triple the risk of getting melanoma later in life, so this is why our tagline is Blow the Whistle on Sunburn! Targeting children’s attitudes and behaviour at a young age will encourage good habits which will last a lifetime and help ensure that children grow up without the risk of developing this most dangerous form of skin cancer.

A Vital Form of Safeguarding

It is well known that children hold coaches/outdoor activity leaders in high regard and respect their advice, so we believe that they are ideally placed to promote healthy attitudes to the sun.  Leading by example (and showing children that they also sun protect their skin) not only encourages involvement, but is a great habit to get into! By working with parents and also getting children to take responsibility for their own skin through education and habit, we can make a difference and help create a healthier nation.

Together we can Blow the Whistle on Sunburn!

A word from our supporters:

martin johnson“The sooner we can find a cure for this terrible form of cancer that is affecting increasing numbers of sportsmen and women, the better”. Martin Johnson CBE, captain, England Rugby World Cup winners 2003 and British Lions 1997 and 2001

“I am pleased to support the Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code. It’s very easy to think that the weather in this country isn’t hot enough to cause damage- it is, so please make sure that you protect your kids when they are outside playing”. Lady Grey-Thompson DBE, Paralympic multiple medal winner, parliamentarian and campaigner

Julia L“I am a lover of the outdoors but also aware of the harmful effects of the sun; so was delighted to be asked to get involved with the Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code. We owe it to all children to make sure they are sun protected.”Julia Bradbury, Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code Ambassador
