
Letters and donations to the fund poured in; more than £3,500 in the first few months as we set out to obtain registration with the Charity Commission.
East Grinstead Rotary Club donated £100; and Compton Harriers, whose runners had been major competitors in the South Downs Way Run and knew Myfanwy so well, made the Charity their beneficiary for their 20 and 40 mile Downlands races in 2000 and donated £750.
Spooners Indoor Bowls Club held a 'bowls and social' tournament that July, and raised more than £1,000.00; whilst Aydn Jones raised another £1,000.00 from sponsorship in the London Marathon. Paschal Moran and Brian Vollentine, from Gainsborough Morton Striders (more SDW8O runners) raised £360 the same way.
East Grinstead Operatic Society raised almost £300, as did B.A. Wingspan Rugby Club (where I was coach); whilst the Forest Row RNLI choir donated £75. East Grinstead Scottish Country Dance Society contributed £150.
East Grinstead complementary therapist and coloratura soprano Lorraine Doron, who had given Myfanwy palliative care in the last few months of her life, was joined by the Chamber Choir Terpsichore, conducted by Paul Ellefsen, pianist Sylvia Trench and soloists Susan Barnard and David Mortimer in 'An Evening of Classical Song' on October 7th 2001 at Michael Hall School, Forest Row which was packed out and raised £750.57
The second Social and Bowls evening on October 27th 2001 at Spooners Indoor Bowls Club, once again kindly donated by Linda and Brian Watson and Maud Spooner, raised £1023.92: whilst the third such event on October 26th 2002 generated an income of more than £600.00. Tombola and raffle prizes were donated by more than forty local businesses.
Kim Hodges had developed a small mole; this was diagnosed as malignant melanoma, and spread within his body with terrifying speed. Less than two years later he died, aged 43, on February 16th 2002, leaving his wife Tina and three sons. His family, friends and colleagues donated £1070.00 to the charity in his memory.

The Probus Club of East Grinstead and District designated the charity as their nominated charity in 2001, and on March 19th at their Annual General Meeting Harry received a cheque for £418.00 on behalf of the charity and had the opportunity to tell the members about the charity.
Amphibians 2 Triathlon Club, based at Christ's Hospital School near Horsham, made this their nominated charity for their annual three event early spring Triathlon Series held at Steyning: and they donated £1,000 after three superb days of competition. Just the Right Shoe International donated £97.96 in the name of their friend Tracy Searle, who has skin cancer. The group members live all over the world. They collect 'Just the Right Shoe' and are brought together on a message board. The money was raised through the sale of badges and key rings.
Saga magazine made our letter the £50 letter in June: a magazine with which we very much want to establish dialogue because this is an age group for which malignant melanoma is so relevant. The same applies to the U3A.
Crawley Millennium Concert Band, thanks to John Fisher and under the wonderfully multi talented Musical Director Sally Fisher, held a superb concert at our superb Chequer Mead Theatre in East Grinstead on Friday May 10th 2001 which donated £1,095.99 from ticket sales, raffle, programmes and donations.
The Chamber Music Group of the Crawley Millennium Concert Band, under Bob Bogucki, organised a concert in Horsham on October 12th with proceeds divided between Myfanwy's Charity and Guide Dogs for the Blind which brought a donation of £105.00 plus a £20.00 donation.
Carolyn Pettett organised a great Children's Party and an evening 50s and 60s Disco over Jubilee Weekend on Sunday June 2nd 2002, with proceeds shared between our Charity and the NCH Children's Charity Helping Vulnerable Children, from which each benefitted by £252.00. I was Master of the Bouncy Castles and, later, Barman!
Harrow Bowls Club donated £50.00 from their Rose Bowl Charity Game.
Freemasons are taught to practise charity and to care, not only for their own, but also for the community: and this was demonstrated at the East Grinstead Masonic Centre during the Freemasonry in the Community Week when on June 27th a cheque for £500 was presented from the Freemasons of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Sussex to match a £500 grant from the Sackville Lodge on June 6th, where Myfanwy used to take the RNLI Choir to sing carols at Christmas time for many years. We are truly grateful for these grants.

Collectible World hosted the Just The Right Shoe collectors weekend in Derby on August 23rd and 24th 2003 where, thanks to organiser Liz Moseley, two porcelain ballet shoes signed by Dame Beryl Grey and Darcy Bussell were raffled and raised the fantastic sum of £797.93

More than £4,000 has so far been raised from the sale of packets of sweet pea Myfanwy Townsend, produced by international seed firm Thompson and Morgan, and available from Kew, Wisley and many local Garden Centres as well as from Harry Townsend direct (£1.00 per packet, or £1.50 including p and p).
Members of staff of Tunbridge Wells District Land Agency Office were sponsored to walk and ride mountain bikes along the 30 miles of the South Downs Way that was their 'leg' of the Agency Relay, and donated £255.00

Sponsorship for Harry the Wheelbarrow Man, when Harry walked from end to end of the north island of New Zealand pushing a wheelbarrow (800 miles in 68 days) to raise 'a wheelbarrow full of money', raised more than £6,000 in Britain and more than £NZ 25,000 in New Zealand. The publicity in New Zealand was so enormous that the walk acted as the catalyst for the formation of the Melanoma Foundation of New Zealand, now a national Charity, and which will include a free walk-in clinic to be named the Myfanwy Townsend Clinic

Carolyn Pettett, a long time supporter of Myfanwy's Charity, celebrated her 40th birthday on January 8th with an enormous 'fun' party: and instead of receiving presents, asked for donations to be made to share between Myfanwy's Charity and a Charity set up in memory of her best friend Jay (Julie-Ann, nee Parnwell) who died of malignant melanoma on December 19th 2001. Carolyn donated £300 from this fantastic event!
The Furngate Club, in Furnace Green, Crawley, is a ladies club that this year celebrates it's 40th anniversary. Each year they raise funds for a local Charity, with a constant programme of coffee mornings, bring and buy sales and social events involving enormous planning and lots of fun. They have raised more than £14,000 in this time, and this year they nominated Myfanwy's Charity and presented a cheque for £600 on January 20th 2005

Leeds United physio Alan Sutton celebrated his 60th birthday on October 1st: and the previous evening, he was greeted with a surprise birthday party at the Woodlands Hotel, Leeds attended by an enormous number of past and present Leeds United players including Lucas Radebe, Gary McAllister, Eddie Gray, Mick Jones, Paul Reaney, Mark Viduka and Jonathan Woodgate, as well as family and friends. He requested donations to Myfanwy's Charity and to Bradford Cancer Support instead of presents: and each Charity benefitted by £630.00! What a wonderful thing to do, and so typical of Alan!

Nigel Hilbourne worked for BOC Edwards for 18 years and, aged 62, was looking forward to early retirement. He and partner Brenda had recently moved to a new house when he was diagnosed with a malignant melanoma which later recurred in the lymph nodes. Six weeks after surgery, the cancer returned, and Nigel died on October 26th 2006 two years after initial diagnosis. Brenda, his family, friends and colleagues raised £510.00 for Myfanwy's Charity, a sum that was matched by BOC. Nigel is very much missed by Brenda and his wide circle of family, friends and colleagues

Family and friends of Frances Anne Taylor of Sheringham, Norfolk, who died on April 19th 2007, donated more than £5,000 in her memory to the Myfanwy Townsend Melanoma Research Fund. Fran died at home after a long and distressing illness borne with characteristic selflessness and courage, following the diagnosis of malignant melanoma in November 2004. Born at Gorleston in 1949, she moved to Sheringham in 1972 with her husand Moss, who had joined the Sheringham Medical Practice. Although only 23 years old she rapidly adapted to the demanding life of a GP's wife. Shortly after moving to Sheringham, she opened the front door to a patient, who had come to see her husband, and was told by the patient 'I've come to see your father'. Such was her youth and beauty. Throughout her married life, Fran devoted herself to her family and bringing up three sons. Although she worked for a few years at Daybreak, most of her free time away from her home and beloved garden was spent carrying out voluntary work. She loved animals and for many years was a strict vegetarian. Amongst the groups she supported on a voluntary basis were Animal Crackers, Sherinham Children's Trust and Daybreak. She truly gave her life for others and will always be remembered by her loving family and very many friends for her kindness and beautiful, warm smile. She wrote the following moving poem just a few weeks before she died: Death be my friend Hold tight my hand as darkness comes Caress my head The pillow holds me soft and still Be calm my soul Fear not the peace that lasts for ever
Haskin's Garden Centre at Snow Hill, East Grinstead gave us tremendous support throughout Melanoma Awareness Week June 16th to 24th, and our team of collectors raised a magnificent £1,107.23
Kirsty Yeoman organised a series of fund raising events in memory of her mother Hilary, who died from malignant melanoma on January 18th 2007, with the help of colleagues at Royal Sun Alliance at Bristol. She sold our wristbands and organised numerous events during Melanoma Awareness Week including an Awareness Day, a 'casual' day and cake stall, all of wich raised £400.35 matched by a further donation of £100.00 from Royal Sun Alliance: and a raffle in July raised £231.50 and a further donation of £100 from Royal Sun Alliance

Roger Bradley, a longstanding and prominent member of the Lancaster Footlights Club and the Lancaster Amateur Dramatic Society in both of which he played many leads, sadly died from malignant melanoma on February 11th 2007 at the age of 42. He was also a keen and knowledgeable gardener, winning a medal at Chelsea Show in 2002: and his parents and friends once again opened his garden this summer and raised £900 for Myfanwy's Charity, a wonderful tribute to Roger
Mark Wadsworth, who had been a close friend of Bruce Craven at Leeds United, nominated Myfanwy's Charity as the beneficiary Charity for his year as President of Sheffield Riverdale Round Table. Fundraising by club members was constant, including a magnificent Ball and auction, and as a result the club was able to make a magnificent donation of £5,000.00
Tracey Croggon took part in the London Triathlon in August over the Olympic distance in memory of her father, and thanks to a great JustGiving page and an enormous number of offline sponsors, she raised more than £1,500
Further donations were received in July through Leeds United, where visitors to their training ground are invited to contribute to Myfanwy's Charity: hundreds of pounds have been received as a result over the past three years
Peter Kohn, who went to school with Myfanwy at Ashbourne Grammar School near Derby, and his wife Trish once again donated £160.00 from visitors to their beautiful garden at Kerrachar, near Kylesku, through the Scotland's Gardens Scheme
Mark Belcher and James Campbell ran the Longleat 10km race and raised almost £2,000 in sponsorship in memory of Mark's brother Gareth, who died on May 28th 2007 at the age of just 39
Jenny Parnwell is a great supporter of Myfanwy's Charity, and her son Dan and his friend Robert (Bertie) Bird of Ladybird Crane Hire in Bromsgrove completed the Fowey River Triathlon in Cornwall on September 16th in memory of Dan's sister Julie-Anne (Jay) Parnwell, who died aged 33 from malignant melanoma on December 19th 2001. They raised a magnificent £2,000
Jacqueline and Clive Brigden took part in the Great South Run in September and raised £475.00 in memory of Pauline Knight, the wife of Jacqueline's brother Paul, who sadly passed away in June 2006 from malignant melanoma
Susan Barnes' mother Shirley Foster of Penshaw, Houghton-le-Spring, died from malignant melanoma on July 23rd 2005, and donations of £574.00 were made at her funeral as recorded earlier. Susan and Colin Barnes are great supporters: and Colin sold one of our Melanoma Awareness wristbands to a colleague at Northern Rock plc, Mark Southcott. Mark's mother had been treated for melanoma some years previously, and he decided to take part in the Great North Run to raise funds for Myfanwy's Charity and increase awareness. He finished in 2 hours 40 minutes, and donated a great £250.00
The Northern Rock Foundation matched the sponsorship money raised by Mark Southcott with a generous donation of £250.00 under their Staff Matched Giving Scheme
A donation of £90.00 was received from the staff of Primrose Hill Hospital in Jarrow, Tyne and Wear in memory of Staff Nurse Annette Lee, a dearly loved friend and colleague
The annual Christmas lunch of the East Grinstead Chamber of Commerce at the Ashdown Park Hotel once again nominated Myfanwy's Charity as the recipient of the raffle, and raised a wonderful £106.00. President Dale Bulbrook (Web Designs) designed, set up and manages our website: and it's largely thanks to him that we attract such enormous support both locally and nationally
Carole Evans of Cheltenham died from ocular melanoma at the sadly early age of 51. An enormous number of friends attended her funeral: as a friend of Carole's commented 'The fact that she has gone, and at such an early age (51) is awful, but all we can do now is be glad that she is at peace, not in pain, keep her in our hearts and memories, and just as importantly do our best to prevent the same situation occuring again'. More than £600 was donated at her funeral, shared between Myfanwy's Charity and the Hospice where she spent her last night, and as a result we received £306.20 plus further subsequent donations
Petee Barnes and Kathy Jepson of Maryland, USA donated $105.00 in memory of Carole Saulsbury of London who died one year ago from melanoma
We spent three days collecting at Haskins Garden Centre, East Grinstead over two pre-Christmas weekends thanks to the kindness of the Manager, Nici Dell, who is a great supporter. Everybody who works there is really kind, friendly and supportive: and as a result we collected £380.87

Old Kirkhamians (Kirkham Grammar School, Preston) and the Wooden Spoon Anti Assassins RUFC once again played a match in honour of the memory of Bruce Craven, a top level athlete, cricketer and rugby player both at school and throughout his adult life until his sad death at the early age of 32 in 2005. Teams play for the Bruce Craven Memorial Trophy, and this match in November 2007 raised £500.00 for Myfanwy's Charity, a wonderful donation: whilst the match itself, before a large crowd, focussed attention on malignant melanoma

The Muskateers are based in North London, and arrange a variety of charity fund raising activities. They held their first ever classical music Concert at Belmont School, Mill Hill, on Saturday February 3rd featuring Gordon Back on piano, Serena Leader on violin and Gemma Rosefield on cello and raised a fantastic £4,089.00, plus lots of Gift Aid, for Myfanwy's Charity
Steve Simms organised a great Acoustic Music gig at CJ's Cafe Bar in East Grinstead on Tuesday February 26th thanks to the kindness of proprietors Chris and Julie. The gig was completely Sold Out long in advance, and music was provided by Danny Bridle, of Bullfrog Music, Mary Leay and Steve Simpson, formerly of Ronnie Lane's Slim Chance Band: and after intensive pressure, Julie was also persuaded to sing and revealed a lovely voice! An enormous raffle, with prizes donated principally by CJ's, Chequer Mead Theatre and Bullfrog Music, raised more than £300: and it enabled almost £1,100.00 to be donated to Myfanwy's Charity.
The monthly quiz at West Hoathly Bowls Club, near East Grinstead, organised by Terry Tietjen and club Chairman Glyn Lyford, donated all the entry fees of £200.00 on Fiday February 29th

Neil Meehan, who played rugby for Old Dartfordians in Kent, sadly died from melanoma aged only 35: and his wife Carole, helped by their two sons Thomas and Patrick, raised £199.00 at a memorial match in Neil's memory held at the club on April 20th. As Carole wrote, 'More important to me was that we distributed lots of leaflets and so I hope more people will be aware of the dangers of skin cancer'

Carole Evans, the Chair of the London IVC (Intervarsity Club) died suddenly from malignant melanoma on November 21st 2007, aged only 51. She had asked for donations to be made to Myfanwy's Charity, and a collection at the AGM of the AIVC (Association of Intervarsity Clubs) in April raised £422.00 in her memory
The parents and teachers of Holland House School in Edgware, North London, donated £704.00 in memory of Melanie Botkai

Haskins Garden Centre at Copthorne, East Grinstead, thanks to Assistant Manager Nici Dell's immense hard work and enthusiasm, threw open the Garden Centre on Thursday May 16th for me to give a talk 'Kew through the looking glass' (behind the scenes at Kew Gardens, from my fourteen years as Assistant Curator there). Haskins provided free coffee, teas and biscuits: and every penny went straight to Myfanwy's Charity. A total of £208.00 was raised including £45.00 in sponsorship for Twelve Months to Raise a Million

Neil Parker organised an amazing 100 hole golf marathon on June 6th on the hilly Purley Downs Golf course, which started at 0430 and finshed at 8pm, and he, Bryan O'Neill, Martin Watters, Alan Page, Chris Blake, Richard McGrath, Carl Lawrence and Jim Norrington raised an amazing £6,500 in memory of his wife Helen's best friend, Gwenda Batt, who had sadly died from melanoma

Elisabeth Ritson of East Grinstead died on April 14th, and donations totalling £490.00 were received at the request of her partner
Kenny Hoyle of Hipperholme, Halifax died at the sadly young age of 55 on June 15th after a brave fight against melanoma. His wife Trish, who is struggling to come to terms with her huge loss, forwarded donations totalling £600 in his memory
Melanoma Awareness Week has attracted more and more support every year since we began it three years ago. Our team of collectors were outside Sainsbury's in East Grinstead on June 14th, where we collected £270.81 with a team drawn exclusively from East Grinstead Rotary Club: and more supporters collected outside Haskins Garden Centre at Snowhill, East Grinstead (Haskins are great supporters) on Saturdays and Sundays June 14th, 15th, 21st and 22nd where we raised almost £1,000.
Daphne Hodge and Margaret Brown organised a wonderful Garden Festival in South Godstone and raised £671.46: Wendy Obey organised a Garden Party in Crowborough, with proceeds shared between ourselves and the Mothers Union, and donated a further £70.00
Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead, thanks almost entirely to the Finance Department, organised a wonderful Coffee Morning and raised £400.00
Peter Kaye and Jenny Parnwell in Cornwall organised a wonderful stand at the Cornwall Festival of Food at the Eden Project, with the dermatological team from Treliske holding a two hour Mole Check. Peter and Jenny raised £250, including 70+ sponsors for me: more importantly, the Mole Check team (from only 60 'clients') found one advanced melanoma and four that warranted closer inspection.

Pete Kaye organised a mole check 'clinic' at the Cornwall Festival of Food a the Eden Project during Melanoma Awareness Week, thanks to the kindness of consultants at Treliske Hospital, and raised £250.00 including donations of £76.50 from 62 sponsors for my trek from rim to rim of the Grand Canyon

Alison Taylor in Alfreton is so 'driven' and has such enormous courage: she organised a 5 mile Midnight Sponsored Walk on Sunday June 22nd and 157 walkers raised £8,075. Sadly, Alison's daughter Katie had died on the preceding Tuesday from melanoma, aged only 15: it is occurences such as this that make us realise why we are doing this, and how essential it is to find a cure for this terrible disease and raise awareness. The cheque was presented to Harry Townsend at a party with all her friends and family near her home, which was a celebration of Katie's life, on Saturday August 9th
Sally and Barry, landlords of The Limekiln at Worksworth, both did a 200ft bungy jump to raise money in Katie's memory and they and all their customers raised £1,100 which was also presented at the party on August 9th
Currently we have raised more than £120,000 in Britain as well as more than $NZ 25,000 in New Zealand, where the walk (click on to New Zealand htm to read my daily diary for the walk) acted as the catalyst for the formation of the Melanoma Foundation of New Zealand, (www.melanoma.co.nz) now a National Charity there.
We have attracted additional support from friends who have accompanied their donations by completing and sending the Gift Aid Declaration form which gains repayment of tax on that sum (click on to Gift Aid Declaration htm and print off the form) to supplement the many and varied fund raising activities planned.
